Sometimes a user no longer needs access to your site — maybe a staff member left, or a contractor’s job is done. This lesson shows you how to safely remove their access from the backend.


⚠️ A Word of Caution Before You Remove Anyone

🔐 Removing a user is permanent — they will no longer be able to log in.

  • Always make sure you’re removing the right person

  • If the user had created posts/pages, you’ll need to decide who should now own that content


🚪 Why You May Need to Remove a User

  • An employee or contractor has left

  • You no longer want a developer to have backend access

  • You’re cleaning up old or inactive accounts

  • You want to tighten website security


🛠️ How to Remove a User

✅ Step 1: Go to Users > All Users

From your WordPress dashboard:

  • Navigate to the Users section

  • Hover over the user’s name

✅ Step 2: Click “Delete”

  • You’ll see a red “Delete” option — click it.

🧠 If the user has created any content (like blog posts), WordPress will ask:

✅ Step 3: Choose What to Do with Their Content

You’ll be given two options:

  • Delete all content – This removes everything the user created.
    (Not recommended unless you’re sure.)

  • Attribute all content to another user – This transfers ownership of posts/pages to someone else.
    (Recommended in most cases.)

Select the appropriate option, then click Confirm Deletion.


✅ Result

Once deleted:

  • That user’s login credentials will no longer work

  • They are completely removed from your backend system


🔐 Pro Tips

  • Always attribute content if the user created anything important

  • Make it a habit to review users regularly and remove any who don’t need access

  • Never leave unused administrator accounts on your site
