Tweak It Yourself (TIY)

Categories help organize your blog posts and improve navigation for your readers. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to add, edit, and delete blog post categories in WordPress.

🎯 What You’ll Learn

  • How to add new blog categories

  • How to edit existing categories

  • How to delete unwanted categories

  • Best practices when working with slugs

➕ How to Add a New Category

✅ Step 1: Navigate to Categories

  1. Log into your WordPress Dashboard

  2. Go to Posts > Categories

✅ Step 2: Add the New Category

  1. Under Add New Category, enter the Category Name (e.g. General Law)

  2. Click the Add New Category button

📝 You can add multiple categories using the same method.

🛠 How to Edit a Category

✅ Step 1: Locate the Category

  • Still on the Categories page, you’ll see a list of all existing categories on the right.

✅ Step 2: Click “Quick Edit”

  • Hover over the category name and click Quick Edit

✅ Step 3: Make Your Changes

  • You can rename the Category Name

  • You can also edit the Slug (URL path)

⚠️ Be careful when changing slugs on live websites, as it may affect your SEO and existing links. If your site is new or you’re reorganizing content, it’s okay to change them.

🗑️ How to Delete a Category

✅ Step 1: Select Categories to Delete

  • On the Categories page, check the boxes next to the categories you want to remove

✅ Step 2: Apply the Deletion

  1. In the Bulk Actions dropdown, select Delete

  2. Click Apply

⚠️ Deleting a category does not delete the posts inside it — they’ll simply be uncategorized unless reassigned.

🔍 Pro Tips

  • WordPress may arrange categories alphabetically or by usage count

  • The Count column shows how many posts are assigned to that category

  • Avoid having too many overlapping categories — keep it clear and simple

  • Use categories for broad topics, and tags for more specific details if needed

✅ You’re Done!

You now know how to:

  • Add new categories

  • Edit existing ones (name and slug)

  • Delete categories you no longer need

  • Keep your content organized for better user experience and SEO

Your blog is now cleaner, clearer, and easier to navigate!
