Tweak It Yourself (TIY)

Sometimes, you may want to remove color from an image to create a classic, clean, or emotionally powerful effect. In this quick lesson, you’ll learn how to convert a photo into black and white using Photopea.

🎨 Why Use Black and White?

Turning an image black and white can:

  • Create a timeless, elegant look

  • Help a photo blend more naturally with a monochrome website design

  • Emphasize texture, contrast, or emotion

  • Reduce distraction from colorful backgrounds

🪄 Step-by-Step: Making Your Photo Black and White in Photopea

🔹 1. Open Photopea and Your Project

Visit https://www.photopea.com and open the image you want to edit (as shown in earlier lessons).

🔹 2. Go to the Black & White Filter

Here’s what to do:

  1. Click Image on the top menu

  2. Hover over Adjustments

  3. Select Black & White

A panel will appear (optional sliders may be visible).

🔹 3. Click OK

You can simply click “OK” to apply the default black and white effect.

🖱️ Optional: If sliders appear, you can adjust the luminance (brightness) of each color channel before clicking OK—for more creative control.

👁️ Before vs. After

You’ll instantly see the transformation:

This can completely change the mood and tone of your photo—great for team portraits, banners, or elegant website sections.
