Hi!
In today’s session, I’ll show you how to change your website’s navigation menus.
What Is the Navigation Menu?
The navigation menu refers to the sections of links on your website that help users move between pages. Typically, you have:
-
Header Menu (at the top of the page)
-
Footer Menu (at the bottom of the page)
-
Practice Areas Menu or other custom menus depending on your website
Step 1: Access the Navigation Menus
-
Log into your WordPress dashboard
-
Go to Appearance > Menus
You’ll see a dropdown labeled “Select a menu to edit.” Depending on your site, you might have more than one menu, all labeled appropriately (e.g. Header, Footer, Practice Areas).
Step 2: Editing the Header Menu
-
Select Header Menu from the dropdown
-
Click “Select”
You’ll now see a list of all items currently in the header, e.g. Home, About, Team, Practice Areas, News, Contact.
Sub-menu items (dropdowns) will appear indented below their parent items.
Step 3: Add a New Menu Item
-
On the left, expand the Pages tab
-
Click “View All”
-
Tick the checkbox for the page you want to add (e.g. “Jordan Reed”)
-
Click “Add to Menu”
The new item appears at the bottom of the menu list. You can now drag it to where you want it to appear.
Step 4: Reorder Items
To rearrange items:
-
Click and hold the menu item
-
Drag it up or down to the desired position
-
To make it a sub-menu item, drag it slightly to the right
-
To revert it back to a main item, drag it to the left
-
Click Save Menu
Refresh your front-end to view the updated navigation.
Step 5: Move a Menu Item Under Another
If you want to make a menu item (e.g. Jordan Reed) a sub-item under Team:
-
Drag it directly beneath “Team”
-
Indent it slightly to the right
-
Click Save Menu
Now it will appear as a dropdown item under “Team.”
Step 6: Remove a Menu Item
-
Click the dropdown arrow next to the item
-
Click “Remove”
-
Save the menu
Note: This only removes the item from the menu — the page itself is not deleted from your website.
Step 7: Group Items for Better Organization
Let’s say your “Practice Areas” menu is getting too long. You can group related services together using sub-menus. For example:
-
Employment Law
-
Bankruptcy
-
Business & Corporate
-
Consumer Protection
-
Contracts & Agreements
-
To group:
-
Drag the services under the category (e.g. Employment Law)
-
Indent each one slightly to make it a sub-menu item
-
Save and refresh
This makes your menu cleaner and easier to navigate.
Step 8: Add a Non-Clickable Parent Item
If you want to group items under a label that isn’t a real page (just a label), you can create a non-clickable menu item:
-
Click “Custom Links” on the left
-
In the URL field, type:
# -
In the Link Text field, type: e.g. “Group of Related Services”
-
Click “Add to Menu”
-
Drag your related items under it and indent them
-
Save the menu
Now users can hover over the label to access sub-menu items, but won’t be redirected anywhere when they click it.
Final Tip
As you follow along, pause this tutorial and apply the steps directly in your dashboard. Hands-on practice will help the concepts stick and build your confidence.
